The Shelburne Museum
Bizarre & Brilliant
About an hour away from Montpelier, lies the city of Burlington.
About 15 mins South of that, is the most bizarre museum.
The Shelburne Museum.
Essentially, the ‘folly’ of a wealthy hoarder.
Electra Shelburne-Webb was a rich socialite who collected buildings and things,
which she then filled with....things!
For example, the entire contents, including wall panels and wall coverings,
of her parents’ 1930-1940 Park Avenue, New York apartment were
brought here and lovingly recreated in a bespoke building.
The rooms were amazing...
but when you also see the ORIGINAL Monet and Degas paintings on the wall....
....it’s mind blowing.

Andrew Whelby “Soaring”. An allegorical painting depicting the triple axis of evil during WWII, from above.
Yes....it’s a real ship!
Well, a paddle steamer.
There’s also a film on board of how it was transported over land from Lake Champlain.
Fabulous.

Oh, and there was a railway station as well...!
But one of the best ‘pavilions’, was The Circus Pavilion.
Incredible.
The ‘Parade’ stretches the entire length.
It was carved over 25 years by a chap and 5 ‘helpers’.
If it was a real parade, it would stretch over 2 miles.
The detail and imagination are unbelievable.
Impossible to capture how amazing the carvings are.

We drove home exhausted
(After another visit to the obligatory guitar shop!)
We had a delicious dinner at Sarducci’s
(a thick beef stew)
and went back to our lovely 1930’s Airbnb.
Lovely day.
